Historical Background and Location

The Vasantrao Naik College of Agricultural Biotechnology, Yavatmal was established in the year 2013 affiliated to Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola. The College is first Government Agricultural Biotechnology College in Vidarbha Region established by Govt. of Maharashtra on the occasion of 100th Birth anniversary of Shri.Vasantrao Naik who was the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1963 until 1975. The college is located at Waghapur Road, Yavatmal distt. Yavatmal.

Most of the Population of the Yavatmal district is farming community having Soybean, Cotton and Pigeon pea as a cropping pattern. The Institute has a well experienced and trained faculties for all the academic activities carried out at the institute. New Building of Institute is under constructions and will be ready in service soon. The institute provides all the facilities for learning and skill development in the field of agricultural Biotechnology.

Roads

Yavatmal is well connected by the road to the nearby cities like Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Akola etc.

Railways

At present the nearest broad gauge railway station is at Dhamangaon which is 48 km. away from Yavatmal.

Airport

At present nearest International Airport is at Nagpur which is located about 140 km away from Yavatmal and another Domestic Airport at Yavatmal itself is under development.

Library :

A building for the college library was constructed. It has a Reading Hall, Books Stacks, Back Volumes of Periodicals, Reference Section, Thesis Section. The book collection of college library is 1917 which includes text books, reference books, periodicals, thesis, etc.

Institute has well established and state to art library having about 1917 books and many Journals, Periodicals related to the field of Agricultural Biotechnology and Allied subjects.

 

 

Academic Programmes

The Maharashtra Council of Agricultural Education and Research (MCAER), Pune is a statutory body constituted under section 12 of Maharashtra Agricultural Universities Act, 1983 in exercise of the powers conferred upon MCAER in the provision (8) of sub section 3 of the Act. Common rules and regulations for admission to various degree programmes in State Agricultural Universities have been formulated. B. Tech (Biotechnology) degree programme is of 4 years duration spread over 8 semesters with credit load of 186 and eligibility for the course is XII standard science passed in 10+2 pattern from Maharashtra State Board of Higher Secondary Education or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with optional subject Mathematics. The medium of instruction is English. The 1st and 2nd semester normally starts in the month of July and January respectively. Intake capacity of the UG programme is 40.

The students admitted to the institute are provided with number of scholarship facilities offered by many agencies like Govt. of India , State Govt., etc.

 

 Mandate

    • To serve as a centre of teaching in the field of Agricultural Biotechnology and Allied Sciences.

 

    • To conduct basic, strategic, applied and anticipatory research in the field of Agricultural Biotechnology and allied sciences for the benefit of farmers, students and local people.

 

  • To disseminate technology to farmers, extension personnel and organizations engaged in agricultural development through various extension programmes.

Objectives:

Vasantrao Naik College of Agricultural Biotechnology, Yavatmal is engaged in Teaching, research and extension activities in the field of Agricultural Biotechnology and working with the following objectives –

    • To foster and support effective education and research on Agricultural Biotechnology.

 

    • To aid rural development through quality education.

 

    • To facilitate overall character building through a well rounded and managed range of activities including the curricular, extra-curricular and co-curricular activity.

 

    • Development of manpower through education and training in field of Agriculture Biotechnology with special emphasize to train human resource required for the Agricultural and allied Industry.

 

    • To promote establishment of Biotechnology based entrepreneurship.

 

    • To facilitate a harmonious symphony of excellence in teaching with a well-rounded motivational approach.

 

    • To devise tools and techniques of biotechnology for crop improvement.

 

  • To develop new and novel value added products, processes, platform technologies and patents.

Salient Achievements:

    • College has huge administrative building with advance facilities which was inaugurated on 20th December, 2017 by the auspicious hands of Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra, Shri. Ch. Vidyasagar Rao. College also has a well maintained guest house and amenities building.

 

    • Well established and furnished Boys and girls hostel facilities with R.O. drinking water, reading room and Wi-Fi facilities.

 

    • The college building is equipped with a library and forum facility for the students.

 

    • Four well established completely digitalized class rooms.

 

    • Established campus with complete CCTV surveillance and Wi-Fi  

 

    • Four well equipped laboratories for conducting the practicals of UG students.

 

    • Established modern gymnasium within the campus.

 

    • This college has ranked first in the semester end examination of first term of academic year 2015-16 among all the granted and non-granted colleges affiliated to the University.

 

    • The first batch of this college passed out in 2016-17.

 

    • Students have got admitted to the higher studies in reputed institutes/colleges and some students have become entrepreneurs in agricultural sector and providing raw materials for agriculture as well as giving training to farmers to improve the productivity of crops.

 

    • Adopted a tribal village Marthad for sustainable development under ‘Swachcha Bharat Abhiyan’.

 

    • Since establishment of college various programmes as per the schedule   of NSS were organized regularly. One special camp was also organized at adopted village Marthad.

 

    •  Organized CET for PG entrance during the year 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 at VNCAB successfully.

 

  • Organized personality development programme for students during academic year 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Almost all the teachers of the college are actively participating in the Training, Annual Krishi Melawa, Krishi Charcha Satra, Krishak Vigyan Manch, Kisan Helpline, Krishi Din, Shivar Pheri, Hello Kastkar and Agril. Exhibition. The teachers were actively involved in the extension activities by visiting the farmer’s field. In addition to their own duties, the teachers have given radio talks, TV programme and published popular articles for the benefit of the farming community. The college has extension education block to carry out crop demonstration on newly released varieties.
